Army says chaplain is first killed in action since 1970
Posted by admin / Under Baptist WarCapt. Dale Goetz of the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson, Colo., was one of five soldiers killed by an improvised bomb on Monday. 3 0 5 Share Before Goetz, the last Army chaplain to die in action was Phillip Nichols, who was killed by a concealed enemy explosive in Vietnam in October of 1970, said Chaplain Carleton Birch, a spokesman for the Army chief of chaplains. The Air Force said none of its chaplains were killed later than 1970. A spokesman for the Navy Chaplain Corps, which also provides clergy to the Marines, didn't immediately return a phone call....
Louisiana College given building for law school in Shreveport
Posted by admin / Under Baptist WarThe owners of a 106-year-old building in Shreveport have given it to Louisiana College for a law school planned to open in 2012. College President Joe Aguillard says the former CNB/United Mercantile building is within walking distance of several courthouses and law offices, and even looks like a law school. The Times reports that the college plans an 80,000-square-foot addition to include a lecture hall, library, student center and glass-enclosed tennis and basketball court. Louisiana College is a Baptist college in Pineville. Aguillard says the law school "will acknowledge the Judeo-Christian foundation of the legal system."
What is a Real Man Part 1?
Posted by admin / Under Baptist WarRecently, I watched a promotional video for the movie, Courageous, a Christian movie which will be available in 2011 (the video can be viewed here). The movie is the story of four law enforcement officers who are called, in very challenging situations, to serve and protect others and their families. Watching this video reminded me that as Catholic men, we are constantly bombarded in the media with images of men, husbands, and fathers that are not only negative, but counter to the biblical image of who we are in Christ as men. The video also reminded me of the series...
God, the Gospel, and Glenn Beck
Posted by admin / Under Baptist WarA Mormon television star stands in front of the Lincoln Memorial and calls American Christians to revival. He assembles some evangelical celebrities to give testimonies, and then preaches a God and country revivalism that leaves the evangelicals cheering that theyve heard the gospel, right there in the nations capital. The news media pronounces him the new leader of Americas Christian conservative movement, and a flock of Americas Christian conservatives have no problem with that. If youd told me that ten years ago, I would have assumed it was from the pages of an evangelical apocalyptic novel about the end-times. But...
Why We Are Not Protestants
Posted by admin / Under Baptist WarOur view of church history. It may come as a surprise to contemporary Protestant and Roman Catholics to learn that Baptists did not originate at the Reformation. The more ancient historians, even those opposed to Baptist principles, admitted this; the more modern writers tend to ignore, dismiss or deny it. There is abundant evidence to affirm that evangelical churches, sound in the essentials of the faith, known by various names, existed in Europe from the days of the Apostles down through the middle ages. The Waidensian Confession of 1120 is an example of sound gospel belief during those times. These...
"I went to a Baptist service and..."
Posted by admin / Under Baptist War"... a game of Wheel of Fortune broke out between the opening hymn and the offering!": You Tube video This isn't about picking on Baptists or game shows, but more about wondering if certain things simply shouldn't be combined (like leotards and liturgy!) This video, by the way, is from the First Baptist Church in Hammond, Indiana, where the pastor is Jack Schaap. (Ht: Mel, who wonders, "What next, Pin the Tail on the Donkey?" Probably notinsurance likely won't cover such a thing).
A History of the Baptists, Chapter 13 - The Peasant Wars and the Kingdom of Münster
Posted by admin / Under Baptist WarThere has been reserved for this chapter an account of certain events which have been alleged against the Baptists, namely, the Peasant Wars and the tumult at Münster. Because of these the Baptists have been charged with the wildest vagaries and with instigating horrible tumults. The most searching investigation has failed to prove that Münzer, the leader of the riots in the Peasant Wars, was a Baptist, or that the Baptists were in anywise responsible for the uprisings. There had long been trouble between the peasants and the nobility. Many times and in different localities, during the preceding one hundred...
